In this 3-hour miniature book workshop Stein and Tingle will introduce students to several different book-making constructions, including the boustrophedon accordion fold (sounds a lot more complicated than it is!), a dragon fold, and a Turkish map fold book. Students will then create several miniature books (3” or under) and will also be prompted to create content for these books through a variety of writing and art prompts. Students are asked to bring photographs, ephemera, family or Hudson history with them to fill their pages.

Our goal is for each participant to leave with new book-making skills and several of their own miniature books. They will be able to repeat the learned steps again and again to make books as gifts, family heirlooms, or treasured conversation pieces.

This workshop is part of a collaboration between The Creativity Caravan and Drop Forge & Tool which will culminate in a community exhibition of miniature books called Let Me Tell You:  Tiny Books, Big Ideas going up at Drop Forge & Tool on May 22.  Participants in the workshop are encouraged (but not obligated at all!) to submit work. All work submitted will be shown.  For more information check out our Open Call for Tiny Books page HERE.

Supplies: All necessary materials will be provided,  but you are encouraged to bring your own ephemera -- photographs, and other small and/or paper things -- to incorporate in your books.

Sustenance: Beverages and light refreshments will be provided.  Please bring a bagged lunch.

The Creativity Caravan co-founded in 2013 by Amy Tingle and Maya Stein, is a studio, gallery, and imaginarium located in Northern New Jersey.  Their mission is to spark, engage, and nourish creativity in communities everywhere. They believe creativity can change lives by building self-confidence, harnessing imagination, helping to practice problem-solving, and bridging differences. Their programs are centered on the joy of discovery and power of collaborative learning, and we offer art and writing experiences for kids and adults of all ages and abilities. They have a brand-new studio space located at 28 South Fullerton Avenue in Montclair, NJ and their vintage caravan, MAUDE (Mobile Art Unit Designed for Everyone) allows them to deliver our programs locally and beyond.

During the spring and summer of 2016, Tingle and Stein transformed their 1965 Covered Wagon caravan into The Tiny Book Show, a roving bookmobile filled with more than 324 tiny books -- each measuring less than 3 inches --  made by amateur and professional artists and writers from around the world.  They stopped in more than 60 locations around the country to display the exhibit, and taught miniature book-making workshops at each exhibit stop. The project route included stops in Hudson, NY in May of 2016, at Basilica Farm & Flea and at the Hudson Area Library.
