If you have always wanted to make the clothes YOU envision in your head, here is your chance! Using the techniques from her book, Design-It-Yourself Clothes, Cal will teach you how to draft your own basic patterns for a T-shirt, skirt and shift dress based on the measurements of your unique body. Then you will learn how to take those patterns and stylize them into endless variations. For each you will make a muslin, fit and correct your pattern, and finally sew one or more finished garments. Before you know it, you'll have a whole new handmade wardrobe!

Sewing experience required: Students must be at least competent beginner-level sewers, and comfortable using a sewing machine. Intermediate and advanced sewers are also welcome and can take on more challenging projects. No previous pattern making experience is necessary.

Supplies: Students must bring their own sewing machine, sewing supplies, pattern making supplies and notions. Complete list below:

For the patterns:
A pad or at least 4 sheets of 18 x 24″ paper, or a roll at least 12″ wide (newsprint or drawing paper)
Notebook
Pencil, sharpener, eraser
See-through 18″ ruler
Tape measure
Scissors (for cutting paper)
Clear tape

For the sewing:
Sewing machine + extension cord
Basic sewing kit: scissors, pins & cushion, tape measure, seam ripper, tailor’s chalk

Fabric:
Skirt: 2+ yards medium-weight cotton or other woven fabric
Dress: 3+ yards medium-weight cotton or other woven fabric (for dress)
T-Shirt: 2+ yards cotton jersey or similar knit fabric (for T-shirt)
Muslin/Jersey: 4 yards muslin (or inexpensive cotton woven fabric which could become a "wearable muslin"), 2 yards inexpensive jersey/knit (for t-shirt muslin)

NB: Fabric should ideally be pre-washed and dried (as you will want to wash your handmade garment) to reduce or eliminate shrinkage.

Sustenance: The class fee includes beverages, snacks and locally sourced studio lunch.

Lodging: Stay at Drop Forge & Tool on site or just a mile away for an additional $200 - $300.  Email Katharine if you are interested! There are singles and shared rooms available on a first come first served basis.

Cal Patch has been a maker since she was a Girl Scout in the seventies. She sews, crochets, spins, embroiders, knits, prints, makes patterns, dyes… hence the name of her label: *hodge podge*. Cal has taught all of these subjects for over a decade, and loves showing people new skills. After seventeen years of being a New York City dweller, Cal now resides in the Catskills where she is becoming a crafty farmer. She teaches at creative retreats around the country and online via Creativebug. Her first book, Design-It-Yourself Clothes: Patternmaking Simplified, was published by Potter Craft. You can see what she’s up to at CalPatch.com.
