Who doesn’t have a beloved T-shirt, skirt or dress they’ve worn to shreds and wish they had 10 more of? Most of our favorite clothes are actually super simple and easily replicated. You’ll learn how to “rub off” a pattern from an existing garment (and contrary to popular belief, you WON’T have to take it apart). Then we’ll stitch up a quick muslin (fit sample) to test the pattern and tweak it if necessary. You’ll always have a fresh crop of handmade garments that feel like old friends!

Note: The muslin will not be a finished garment, but can likely be finished after class and used as a “wearable muslin”.

Please bring 2-3 options for your project: simple T-shirts /blouses /skirts /dresses (no pants!) with minimal gathers or pleats work best.

Skill level requiredAdvanced - Beginner. Students must bring their own sewing machine and have a basic knowledge of how to use it and have a few projects under their belt. (We highly recommend our Cal's Befriend Your Sewing Machine class if it has been a while since you used your machine!)

Sustenance: Snacks and beverages will be provided. Please bring your own lunch.

Supplies:
Sewing machine + extension cord
Pad or roll of paper, at least 14″ wide (can be newsprint, drawing paper, etc)
Pencil/eraser/sharpener
Scissors (for paper)
Ruler (ideally 2″x18″ clear plastic sewing ruler)
Tape Measure
Clear tape
Making/Painter’s/Washi tape
Push pins or T-pins (you only need a few; don’t worry if you don’t have any)
2-3 yards (depending on item you bring) fabric similar to original garment — must be knit for a knit garment or woven for a woven one!
All-purpose thread
Basic sewing kit: Scissors, ruler, tape measure, pins + pincushion, seam ripper, chalk (or other marking tool)

Cal Patch has been a maker since she was a Girl Scout in the seventies. She sews, crochets, spins, embroiders, knits, prints, makes patterns, dyes… hence the name of her label: *hodge podge*. Cal has taught all of these subjects for over a decade, and loves showing people new skills. After seventeen years of being a New York City dweller, Cal now resides in the Catskills where she is becoming a crafty farmer. She teaches at creative retreats around the country and online via Creativebug. Her first book, Design-It-Yourself Clothes: Patternmaking Simplified, was published by Potter Craft.
